The Indigenous Youth Summit

The Indigenous Youth Summit, part of the Festival of Indigenous Rugby League, was a chance for the youngsters to get the opportunity to take part in various cultural and leadership workshops. AUAHA were fortunate to facilitate a number of Haka workshops.

Haka, considerably the absolute embodiment of unity has become the face of Aotearoa attracting people from all over the world to feel connected to our culture. Tikanga sessions were also delivered and this directly refers to Māori customary practices or behaviours. The concept is derived from the Māori word Tika which means Right or Correct. So in Māori terms, to act in accordance with Tikanga is to behave in a way that is culturally proper or appropriate.

Our dedicated mentoring focused on techniques to enhance positive decision making, encourage communication, respect and equality. Our Haka workshop partnered as an interactive form of physical expression of the theory values obtained.

Many Indigenous NRL players spoke life in to the members of the summit including former professional rugby league athlete, Preston Campbell.
